I experiment with paper of all kinds, acrylic paint and mediums, and other found materials. I’m inspired by early 20th century and contemporary abstract painters and the idea of reusing/repurposing materials that might otherwise be put in the recycling bin or shredder.

Flora abstracts are a new focus in subject and substrate. These four paintings were featured in my second solo exhibit at the Eden Prairie Library from July 2-July 30, 2024.
Flora abstracts are a new focus in subject and substrate. These four paintings were featured in my second solo exhibit at the Eden Prairie Library from July 2-July 30, 2024.
Red Floral was painted during a course with Sante Fe artist Andrea Cermanski. The palette is a blue-purple background, orange-red and white for the flowers, and green and white for the leaves. There are several layers of paint that create depth and texture and a sense of tropical adventure.

Graduation Bouquet was inspired by a real bouquet that a friend made for her graduating senior. Starting out as a very realistic, top-down view, it became more and more abstract with each layer of paint.

Mixed Hydrangea is a technically a collage made of 16 letter-size paintings glued to canvas. Each painting is an exercise in mixing Titan Buff paint just enough with a variety of colors to get subtle color variations seen in hydrangea flowers. Full of depth and texture and color, this piece is a window into a fantastical garden.

Dappled Pinks features a limited palette of Alizarin Crimson Red, Titan Buff and Cadmium Yellow on a dark blue background. Mixing a lot of paint for color variation and applying it with a larger flat brush gives a sense of movement and light coming through here and there.

Torn Apart is a series of four collages on brown paper bags. Each collage is made from ripped up pieces of my failed artwork, modeled after the “process” Lee Krasner (1908-1984) described in a 1978 interview with New Your Art’s World. The series was part of the Inspired by...Works by Cheryl Kessler exhibit at the Long Island Children's Museum (June-August 2023) and part of a solo exhibit at the Eden Prairie Library in October 2023.
